Hand Held Barcode Scanners

Looking for some hand held barcode scanners?  Back in the day there was only barcode scanners that were tethered to the POS device and there was no way to scan items other than to bring the items to the device.  While it was possible to work within this restraint, it did make certain tasks a bit more complicated.

Now that time has progressed as well as technology, there is now the option for us to have hand held barcode scanners that we can take out and about and use just about anywhere we please.  They make use of either Bluetooth or Wi-Fi technology.  This allows the user to travel out a certain distance from the base of the unit and scan whatever inventory needs to be scanned within the facility.

This is quite handy when dealing with inventory that is too big to drag over to the POS device or when checking up on inventory throughout the store or warehouse.

One other interesting application is to use the hand held barcode scanners along with a mobile POS device.  These have just come out and offer customers within the store a lot more flexibility in that they can “check out” at any place within the store.  This comes in handy during peak times when the front desks are crowded and the lineups are so long that some customers are getting frustrated and ready to leave.

Now anyways, back to the hand held barcode scanners, there are several of them out there for you to choose from and the one you select is going to be dependent upon the price range you want to operate within, as well as what kinds of features you’re willing to have or to do without, whatever the case may be.

For instance, if you’re interested in handheld barcode scanners that don’t have a cord and are wireless, you’re going to be looking at spending around $300+.  If however you can make do with a simple USB barcode scanner, you can go as low as $60 and be fine.

As far as which ones to consider, one popular one is the Ccd Contact Barcode Scanner USB.  This device is pretty cheap at $60 and it pretty much does what it’s designed to do.

Once you get it, it comes with the scanner of course as well as a booklet.  The booklet contains a bunch of barcodes that allow you to configure settings like the scan mode as well as the audio feedback.  If you’re installing this on Windows XP, installation is a snap as all you have to do is plug it in (it’s Plug ‘N Play ready).  Then, once installed, just point and shoot it at the barcodes and you’re in business.

Of course there are plenty more hand held barcode scanners to consider, I would suggest you have a look around and do your due diligence before you decide on a scanner, but do keep in mind the above one.
